A Blogger I Am Not! Make Way for the Musicians!

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Dear friends-  I have decided to replace my virtual soapbox (aka “blog”) with a Musicians Page.

I figure that the fact & fiction provided here about the great musicians I’m performing with will prove much more interesting.

And, since I seem to find myself at an alarming loss for words (and time), I will leave this page to my amazing and patient web designer Sean!

So, I will say “ciao for niao” and make way for the merry band of music makers who grace the stage with talent and mighty glory!

So, coming soon:  The Band!

Spring Equinox!

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

This is a magical weekend as Groov and I kick off the national radio campaign of CARAVAN.  I am chuffed to have already received very positive response from a couple of stations out there—  a shout out to Russ Haines at WWSP in Steven’s Point, WI & to Jim Sintetos at KRML in Carmel, CA for picking up “Caravan” from off of his mountain of submissions and putting it on!

I had a very fun interview with Jim on his show this morning “First Look” where he features jazz recordings hot out of the oven.  We had a good laugh and you can hear the interview on KRML’s website (or click on the link on my Press page).

In that interview I did give a shout out to several of the musicians on my album-  Joel Behrman, Jon Monahan and Matt Swindells, but I don’t think they made the final interview….I think their names were dropped in order to perpetuate the stereotype that we singers are indeed DIVAS who think only of ourselves!  [and instead of clapping like regular folk, we just bang our big, bejeweled knuckles on tabletops or on the backs of the theatre seats in front of us!]   ;)

I still need to write that PRESS RELEASE announcing to the print/online/blog world of my new “baby”– anyone out there wanna help me with that?  Maybe it’s time to contact the “San Francisco’s resident Flaneur“, Dave Bisson, I just know he’d come to my rescue!

Happy Spring!  It’s here!  The [real] beginning of the new year!

Caravan is off and running! 2010!

Monday, March 15th, 2010

March 15, 2010-  I haven’t written in forever because this Little Red Hen has been busy!

I am delighted that my release dates for CARAVAN came and went quite smoothly!

In honor of the Motherland, Kansas, the physical sale of the CD was January 29, 2010– Kansas Day of course.  The day our nation celebrates welcoming Kansas into the fold.

And in memory of my merrymaking brother Larry, the digital release was celebrated on his birthday February 26th, 2010!

I was psyched that the review by Eric “Doc” Smith, Arts & Entertainment Editor for BEYONDCHRON.ORG came out the very day of the digital release.  No one could have timed it better!

My national RADIO campaign kicks off with the official RELEASE of the album on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at 12 noon.  DANTE says in the Divina Commedia that there are 3 criteria for entering Pardiso:   1)  spring equinox  2)  spring equinox in sign of Aries   3) and the time must be 12 noon.

I actually got my Radio Packets mailed out with the invaluable help of JODY GINSBERG, who designed the most amazing Radio One Sheet the world has ever seen.  And thanks to DAVID BISSONflaneur who helped me package up and mail out 400 + packages (when everyone else lamely flaked out at the last minute).   Thanks, JODY &  DAVE!

And here we are one week later!  I’ve received my first feedback-  and it’s very positive!  Plus a request to do an interview on KRML Radio with Jim Sentitos and his show entitled “First Look”.  I’m not only psyched to talk about the album but to then pretend I’m psycho and eventulaly to begin stalking Jim and requesting “Misty” down the phone in the breathiest voice I can muster!

I need to also summon the energy to begin a print campaign blitz with a PRESS RELEASE!   But instead I think I’ll just work the beads whilst visualizing a PUBLICIST!

Ad astra per aspera!

Wow…end of the year, as we know it.

Well, the gig on the 23rd was a bit weird in the first set.  The P.A. was a bit medieval, my bass playing was shaky as i tried to negotiate the mic and not hit alex, who was snuggled in tight to my left on guitar!  Vocals were a bit drowned out by guitar frequencies & we had no horn player!  So, needless to say, the 1st set being a bit off-kilter.   We powered thru & the 2nd set was MUCH better!  We were warmed up, but then Dan Feiszli still managed to wipe the floor with us–  some of the best bass soloing  i have ever seen/heard in my life!   joe cohen arrived and rocked the alto, and we all settled in for a fine 2nd set.  All’s well that ends well!

Thanks to all who came out to brave the wind!  And a special shout out to Jeff Glass & Jeannette Sarmiento for their good help!  Jeannette came up and helped me out on “Canto de Ossanha” (Baden Powell).

Hope everybody’s feeling that warm glow from holiday spirits & good conversation!   May we somehow be able to renew our hope in the world in 2010.

Happy New Year!

New Jazz CD “Caravan” & Deluxe Show

Friday, December 18th, 2009

I’m getting excited about the show on Wednesday (12/23/09) at Deluxe! It will truly be an adventure. I’ve been busily brewing up new charts and dusting off a couple of tunes I wrote & reacquainting myself with my bass.

I’m so blessed to have some great players joining me on this gig. Jarrett Cherner on piano, Dan Feiszli will eventually arrive from another gig (at Yoshi’s-SF), so that’s why I have to strap on the bass for a couple…, Matt Swindells on drums! I’ve been working in my little living room with Alex Dalzochio who will be joining me on guitar for my originals and a couple of Brazilian tunes in the first set! And rumor has it, Joe Cohen will be showing up with his tenor! I am so psyched!

I haven’t gigged with/seen pianist Jarrett Cherner since that magical summer afternoon we (J, Gabe Davis, Matt Swindells & I) played in Dan Feiszli’s studio. What a fun session that was! We knocked out 3 tunes: “Afro Blue” in 5/8-6/8; an improvised, rubato intro to “We’ll Be Together Again” that ended up as a “burner”; and finally “East of the Sun” a nice, happy scha-wing tune. “East of the Sun” will be released digitally as I didn’t think it quite fit the vibe of the UPCOMING CD “Caravan”. I listened to it again after a few months and it sounds so fresh, that I wished I’d included on the album!

The CD: After fits and starts, various vacations & house moves, and general “bizarre-ness”, the CD has somehow landed itself in the duplication house.  My new baby should be in my arms just in time for Christmas!   NOT! Ugh!

It allegedly will arrive the week after! Just in time for NEW YEARS (the new Biggest Shopping Day of the Year!)

10 songs in 2010!   10 in 2010!

The ARTWORK is amazing! Original designs and drawings by painter Louis Cubba! It looks so good! It really captures the abstract, mirage-like visions of a caravan of camels in a hot, windy, sun drenched terrain! Plus, the vivid orange with yellow wisps of whipping sand provide a warmth and movement that I can only hope is found in the music that lies within.

I’ve got to go upload some of the new tunes to MySpace now. Well, coffee first, then uploads…
